We live 1000 miles away from our children, and I get depressed just thinking about how hard it is, given high fuel prices, for anyone to visit, in either direction.

Some wise people remind us that every problem is an opportunity in disguise. So today I’m stretching myself to think about $4-per-gallon gasoline in this light.  I feel like Pollyanna playing the glad game, but I’ve always thought that she gets a bad rap anyway, and I’m proud to be on her side. So here goes–what opportunity might lurk in high gas prices? Keep in mind that might is a crucial word here.

We might become a more physically active people — think walking and bicycles.

We might make new friends — think carpooling and mass transit.

We might find more time to read or knit or sleep — again with the mass transit.

Someone might invent new technology or come up with new transportation business models.

Home business might become even more attractive.

We might rediscover the joys of staying at home –our county is promoting “Staycations” this summer.

How are you coping? Beyond that, what ideas do you have for making the best of gas price pain?
